Cover your pie-hole

I was on the WTC PATH train and noticed a new video ad between WTC and Exchange Place. The video showed a man with wide open mouth yawn. The ad was for a Tylenol product that helped you to sleep.

The ad was nauseating because of the open mouth yawn. I hate when people yawn with their open mouths exposed for everyone to see. How hard is it to cover your mouth? If you can cover your mouth when you are coughing or sneezing, then you can extend that same courtesy when you yawn. The inside of someone’s mouth is not attractive. The facial expression associated with yawning is not cute on humans.

Let’s not forget that with an open mouth yawn you are exposing yourself to debris, bugs, and some asshole who doesn’t have the descency to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze. Your open mouth yawn is literally a net catching all those things you don’t want in your body.

Then there’s the combination of ugly yawning and bad breath! There have been numerous occasions where I’ve been hit with the gush of someone’s rancid breath as they exhaled when they yawn.  The foul pungent breath was enough to make me gag and vomit at the same time.

So the next time you’re feeling a little tired and that urge to open your mouth to yawn – please, please cover your pie-hole!

I’m going to add this to the list of Commuter Etiquette, #17.
